    Japan’s Ume Regions

Japanese umeshu is closely connected to the country’s diverse ume-growing regions, with local varieties shaping its flavour and character. Wakayama, particularly the Kishu region, is Japan’s leading ume-producing area and is renowned for the large, aromatic Nanko-ume. Gunma and Nara also have long-established ume-growing traditions, while Yamagata and Fukui are known for distinctive local varieties suited to cooler climates. Southern regions generally offer warmer growing conditions and fruit with rich acidity and fragrance, while northern areas develop different seasonal characteristics. These regional differences give Japanese plum liqueur a diverse range of aromas, sweetness and acidity.
