Lowestoft
Lowestoft
Our first visit with Liam McElhinney, before the inaugural launch of the Lowestoft project in late 2022, was educational, cultural
and, well, very Tassie. Fish and Chips at "the great spot near the airport" before what was a very comprehensive tour of most of the wine regions in and around Hobart and beyond (Derwent Valley, Coal River Valley, the lower reaches of the East Coast and the area being referred to as Forcett, of which you will hear a lot more about over time) and comprehensive tasting of all he is up to for both Lowestoft and Strelley Farm. We learned he is very open about what he does, doesn't pull any punches and is capable of a good amount of cheek. So, to conclude this prettyepic day, in a combination of those three-character traits, he nonchalantly placed a 'cleanskin' downon the tasting bench and asked us for our opinion.
What was to eventually be known as 'LaMeilleure' Chardonnay 2021-the pigeon pair to 'La Maison'Pinot Noir, of which there has already been so much written and said about.
So now, almost 12 months on, we are happy to present to you this same wine, along with the multi-award winning 2021 'La Maison' Pinot Noir and (also multi-award winning) 2020 'Single Vineyard'Pinot Noir (this time from the Jacoben in the Derwent Valley). We believe this Lowestoft project to
be one of the most exciting in Australian wine and this year’s release only serves to consolidate the belief further.-Sam Hooper, July 2023.
